Remember when you were a child and you dreamt of being an astronaut, fireman or ballet dancer? What happened to those dreams? While most of us may no longer consider these dream careers realistic, there is probably a path or two we wish we’d gone down – rather than the one that led us to our current career. Fortunately, the door is not closed even though you may think it is.
Did you know that more than half of U.S. and UK workers are dissatisfied with their career? It’s true, and furthermore, the average person changes career fields three times during his/her lifetime. So if you’re feeling like you might be primed for a career change, you aren’t alone.
The good news is that you might be in better shape than you think. The tools you need to discover your new career path are already inside of you. You simply need a framework to work within to effectively pull out this information. There are a number of steps you can follow.
Here are some to start with:
1. Identify what’s working and what’s not working in your current career and how it’s serving your life.
2. Re-discover/uncover your core traits, talents and professional skills
3. Pinpoint your true passions
4. Turn those special characteristics into marketable professional skills
a. Example: If you crave freedom, perhaps you can position yourself as a self-starter who needs little direction
b. Example 2: If you have a knack for (and enjoy) connecting with others, you might describe yourself as a sounding board for others. Thus enabling you to identify core organizational issues that others might not identify
The most critical element to consider when seeking a career change is to put your “life” before your “career”. In other words, make certain that work serves life and not the other way around. When you align your passion with your profession you not only identify your ideal job, you also make yourself an ideal employee.
